Are you fond of wearing shoes, especially ones that you don’t regularly wash and hang dry to open air? Listen up, buddy, for this article may alarm you. If you do not change your shoe-cleaning and shoe-wearing habits, you may be susceptible to a nail disorder named nail fungus.
This is a condition you won’t usually notice until it becomes worse. You may think it’s just the effect of not washing your feet properly, or just the effect of not eating your proper amount of protein, but you will eventually see discolorations on your toenails (in color black or yellow, you choose) caused by fungi named dermatophytes that have invaded your toes due to the improper environment you’ve exposed your feet to. (Wet, dim, stinky, perfect for mushrooms to multiply… you get the picture.) These dermatophytes will continuously invade your toe nails until you will see them crumbly and stinky. If still left untreated, the dermatophytes may continue torturing your entire feet, causing sores and pus (in later stages) to appear. Bad news is, immunocompromised patients such as those suffering from HIV will most likely get this condition, as blood flow towards the extremities will be decreased. Poor nutrition and oxygenation follows, making the feet even more prone to infections.
