We are always surrounded by smoke, dust and other kinds of wind pollution that we do not even feel the fact that the air has lost its freshness. The only time we realize this is when we go to some rural area or a country where there is less pollution, and nature is in abundance. Over the years I have found that the best way to keep my skin healthy is to use less detergent and to shield my skin from detergent if there is any possibility that there will be contact.

The skin on the scalp is also affected by strong shampoo. I have tried almost every shampoo from the supermarket and the chemist with varying levels of success. By far the best is to purchase shampoo from a salon and to use a fully qualified beauty salon. I found that I react to conditioner much more than shampoo and so I use high quality conditioner on the ends of the hair only.

However, I have found that by avoiding contact with detergents while travelling stops the problem. It wasn’t because of the stress at all.

The hand soap in public bathrooms is off limits for me. Highly perfumed and made cheaply, it makes my hand react badly. The recent flu pandemic made hand sanitiser widely available in small bottles that you apply with no water. I keep a little bottle in my hand bag.

Definitely do use both oral and topical steroids when you need them. However, I found that if I wasn’t also practising some self care, my condition would yo-yo from looking like it was clearing one day to flaring up twice as bad the next day. Self care includes caring for my skin from the outside as well as caring for my body from within.

I found improving my diet helped. I use the blood group diet. The great thing about the blood group diet is that you can learn the types of foods that your body needs more of and the types to avoid. I am AB+ and I am told this is a great blood group to have. However, I have found that I need to avoid red foods. Diets can be daunting, especially with a family. So, I changed first just one meal. I started with breakfast and through that change I had changed 1/3 of my diet. That is enough sometimes to tip the balance back toward good health.
