The skills and strategies for academic and behavioral interventions used in special education are effective for students with autism. However, what works for one student may not always work for another student.
Autism is the most individualized of all disabilities, and here is a list of things found that every child on the Autism spectrum needs in school:
-All students on the autism spectrum need social skills and play group interventions to build and maintain friendships with students in the general educational population.
-All students with autism benefit from a visual schedule, even the Aspergers students who are verbal and academically successful.
-All students with autism need a consistent schedule and a process for schedule changes built into their program.
-All students on the spectrum need a behavior and sensory plan.
Parents and other professionals outside the school are a great resource to build programming for autism students that is able to be generalized to multiple settings, as it is team work that brings success!
I hope this information will help parents, help teachers, and administrators learn about students on the autism spectrum. Share the ideas and strategies that work at home with your school. Share the critical need for additional programming and resources to address the social, behavioral and academic needs of autism students, as told by Ms. Green, a learning specialist in Adams County.
One of my daughters, who has autism, was in Kindergarten this last year and I am very impressed with her special-ed teacher; we have an open communication that aids in my daughter’s daily needs.
